Without doubt one of the most important phenomena in recent decades in information industry has been the emergence and popularity of machine-readable databases, particularly online databases. In fact, databases can almost be said to have created the information industry as we know it. Thus to write a historical summary of this phenomenon is important. The present paper offers a brief summary of important events in online database industry in recent decades before and after internet is presented.
