This paper redefines the epistemological aspects of information and knowledge with emphasis on the role of context on these two concepts. Whether the context has an explicit or implicit impact, its role in the lifecycle of data and knowledge in the scientific literature has been discussed. Different views of researchers from different scientific areas especially in knowledge and information science has been reviewed. Also the different meanings of information and knowledge in various contexts and the role of context in understanding knowledge have been discussed. The paper has taken analytical review as its methodological approach. In this regards, the philosophical views have been taken into account. Findings indicate that the context has an important role on both the definition and understanding of information and knowledge and that these concepts have different meanings in different contexts.
