The purpose of designing any information storage and retrieval system is to retrieve the relevant information. Relevancy is the cornerstone for design and evaluation of such systems. There is an ongoing effort to increase relevancy, i.e. matching user’s requirements with the response made by retrieval systems. Experts in the field of information sciences have offered several models for measuring the relevancy of an information retrieval system. These fall into two broad categories of traditional and modern models, each with its own set of advantages and draw-backs. The present paper attempts to provide a facility for evaluation of IR models by describing each model along with its pros and cons.
